What does Hep B, construction, Nancy Pelosi and the iPhone have in common?

They were all photo assignments I picked up for the Gaurdsman at City College of San Francisco.

BART

This is a bunch from what I have been shooting on the BART. I try to make a new photo every time I ride, but sometimes in the mourning I sleep on the way to school. I always kick myself when I wake up and I see a great shot I just missed.

Little D celebrates

Little D of the McClymonds boys basketball team helps cheer on the girls team with his teammates during the girls' first playoff game. Unfortunately, their cheering wasn't enough to propel the girls to victory. Photo by Alison Yin

Mustard Flowers in Sonoma

Last week I participated on a commercial shoot in Sonoma, which is part of the Napa wine country. It was indeed very beautiful driving through vineyards and pastures full of blossoming mustard flowers. Photo by Alison Yin

Silence the Violence

Last Friday, I attended a vigil for all the recent slew of deaths that have occurred in Oakland the past couple of weeks. It was a bang bang assignment - ran there from a basketball game that went longer than expected, raced against the light, and then raced back to file before deadline. Phew. Photos by Alison Yin

Protest in Berkeley

Last week I covered a protest in Berkeley that essentially turned out to be an anti-war/pro-war protest. This was the largest protest that I've covered to date. Apparently, the city of Berkeley spent $93,000 in extra cop coverage and overtime for the one-day event. I got my camera shoved in my face by a Marine, and the cops did nothing. That's tax-dollars well spent in my book. Photos by Alison Yin

First time at the Paramount

This was my first time at the Paramount Theater in downtown Oakland, and it is really an incredible venue. Great acoustics, beautiful architecture, spacious area. I got to photograph Jill Scott, but only her first three songs before the photogs got kicked out.

Consuela Patterson, 43, of Oakland, Calif., waits for the results of her AIDS test, which sits on the desk next to her in downtown Oakland. Patterson says she gets tested at least once a year, and after waiting 20 minutes for the results, she found out that she tested negative for HIV.

Memorial

I feel like the news in Oakland has been dominated by a rising number of homicides. Although a lot are gang-related, some have just been really sad and totally bizarre.

This is a photograph of Raynisha Spencer, 18, who is a student at Edwards Shands Adult School in Oakland, Calif. She (and other classmates) came to school yesterday morning to be greeted with the news that her favorite and most influential professor, John Dennis, had been murdered over the weekend. Dennis had taught at three different higher education schools (all at the same time) throughout the Bay Area and was known for his enthusiasm and passion for caring for his students. He was killed in his home Saturday night and then driven to a beach. An officer pulled over the car and saw that an arm was poking out from a blanket and called for re-enforcement. Spencer says, "I just can't believe that someone would kill such a wonderful person." She continues, "Dr. D instilled passion for writing poetry in me and for learning, he made me want to come to school, and now I feel like that passion is gone." Photo by Alison Yin

The Howl

The Howl from Adm Golub on Vimeo.

Tucked into the foothills of the Sierra National Forest lies Coulterville, a small gold rush town. The town is along the original stage coach route to Yosemite National Park, and it has retained much of its character and culture of the mid 1800s. Each May, Coulterville hosts a coyote howling contest that draws tourists and locals alike and includes lots of music, frivolity, and howling galore.
