The Other Side of the Lens

Photojournalists learn to deal with the consolidation of newspapers and the increased push for multimedia news content.

The newspaper industry is a tumultuous place for photojournalists. Newspaper corporations now own many newspapers instead of one and can cover a larger area with less staff. The Internet has created a need for photojournalists to know how to be videographers, photographers, and reporters all in the same day. If that were not enough, the corporate business model requires increasing profit margins, which means cutting cost. Paving the way for layoffs and buyouts. Many photographers are still optimistic during this time of uncertainty as to the direction of the profession and its economic viability.

This is a look at current issues facing photojournalist today and how they are coping.

Updates

Here are some recent photos from the past couple of weeks - I've been pretty busy (in a good way), so the blog has slipped a bit. The first photo is from the open-casket viewing of Bishop Montrose at Our Lady of Fatima in Modesto. The following three pictures are from a vigil for Mario Martinez who was killed by a car in front of his home last Friday in Modesto.

These are images from my West Oakland project:
