Oaksterdam University for Chronicle of Higher Education

I spent a day making photos at Oaksterdam University for Chronicle of Higher Education a few weeks ago. Oaksterdam University, America's first cannabis college, teaches all aspects of the cannabis industry so that students are prepared to find work in one of the hundreds of dispensaries in California or to start their own business. I'm pretty unfamiliar with this scene so it was great to get exposed to a new world, and everyone was super friendly.

Taiwanese New Year

A couple of weeks ago, my good friend Emilie took me to an annual Taiwanese New Year celebration in a downtown Oakland loft/warehouse. It was an impressive event - great food, fire dancing and a Bollywoodesque play with lots of interesting costumes - all coordinated by Jennie Chuang.

It was nice to take photos just for fun, which I haven't done in quite awhile. One camera, one lens, no deadlines... and the most beautiful tiger I've ever seen!

Mmmmmmm Veggies!

In an effort to eat healthy, organic foods, Alison and I have began receiving a fresh produce box from River Dog Farms. Each week, we get a box of seasonal fruits and vegetables that taste so fresh and delicious. The box has introduced us to lots of new vegetables, forcing us to learn how to cook with new ingredients including romanesco, rapini, kale, chard and turnips. If you're in the Bay Area, I definitely recommend this - not only do you end up eating more veggies, but you're supporting a local organic farm!

Turkey!!!

While I was scouting for another shoot I saw some wild turkeys. I don't know what everyone was thinking when I went running across the hills chasing after the birds. These guys live in the hills above Oakland. I had a blast getting these. Next time I will take some longer lenses.

The sweet smell of smoke

I shot my first assignment for the [X]Press, SF State's student Newspaper, yesterday. I had fun shooting the assignment even though, as you can tell, the images I came away with are no the most exciting. The story was about classes being added to the school's schedule at the last minute. I guess I just like shooting daily assignments.

Stranger Furniture

It's a new year, and I feel inspired to blog more and more frequently!

I'm still going through photos from 2009, so here's a set that Adm and I both did for our friend and furniture maker Bill Stranger. Bill made a bed with side table for a client so we took it to the parking lot behind his studio to photograph them in Altadena. Although the backdrop gave a nice industrial look, it was pretty cluttered so we had to figure out how to keep the light off of the back drop while overpowering the sun and highlighting the wood. Additionally, it was no easy feat moving the bed around since it was pretty heavy, and we had to be careful to not damage it.

Jake Parent for the Chronicle of Higher Education

I photographed Jake Parent at UC Santa Cruz awhile back for the Chronicle of Higher Education. Parent, a stellar student, received conditional acceptance to San Jose State University, his first choice school, yet after accidentally marking the wrong major on his online application, he was told he'd have to postpone starting school until the following semester. Instead of putting his plans on hold, Parent was luckily able to transfer to UCSC in time to start for the Fall 2009 semester. Because of California's budget crisis, state schools, such as San Jose State U., have started finding any kind of loophole in students' applications/admissions processes so that they have some justification for putting their admission on hold. Simply put, there are too many students at a time when schools are cutting classes and faculty so students are being told to postpone their higher education plans indefinitely.

A Mostly Steampunk Halloween

Alison and I went to a Steampunk Halloween Party at our friend's house in Modesto. Tawny and Phil always have amazing parties making it well worth the drive into the valley. Everyone embraced the holiday spirt, and the costumes were fantastic. I hope that everyone else had a great halloween.

A room to live and work in

Our living room doubles as Alison's office and a place to meet with couples for wedding consultations as well as a significant part of our home. We wanted to create a nice and personal space where we would feel comfortable with friends and family, but one that also allowed us to meet with people on a professional level.

To create the room, we started with the rug to give us the color palette, which was Alison's mom's idea - her mom helped create a design plan for the room. Then we chose colors for the walls and ceiling to match the rug (swiss coffee for the ceiling, whispering wheat for three walls, and terracotta red for the accent wall). Next, we painted a couple of salvaged tables to pull out the blues from the rug. We also had silk drapes made to not only help with insulation, but also give the place a little more of a "homey" feel. The furniture is a combo of thrift stores, Anthropologie, CB2, Therapy, and Ikea. We're still short one coffee table (which a friend is making), and wall art.

Nikki Kellogg

About a month ago, I was approached to put together an aspiring dancer's portfolio. Nikki Kellogg, 22, is planning to move to L.A. to audition and make a push for being a dancer, and she said she needed a portfolio to show around. This was an entirely new project for me, and we spent quite a bit of time planning our shoots and what kind of photos she wanted to showcase her looks and talent. We did a combination of "studio-esque" shots with dancing in the street and more traditional head shots. Nikki was really wonderful to work with, which made my job a whole lot easier. My friends and acupuncturists, Ky and Chris run Oakland Community Acupuncture, OCA. These guys are fantastic! They are very professional and when I am there I just want to hang out. Old Al, New Knees

You all keep asking me how my dad is doing. Well, he is great. He is able to do just about everything now except step on the break, and he didn't do that before. Having both of his knees replaced was hard on him, but he has bounced back and has even been spotted walking around Noah's in Modesto by himself. This picture was taken at Kiaser in Modesto the day after he had his surgery. He was in a lot of pain when this was taken, and the doctors were still having to give him blood. He told me during this visit that he was going to be ready to photograph this coming season. It looks like he might be right. He wont be able to kneel by then, but there are places he can stand and shoot from at the Raiders and the 49ers. The Old Guy still has it... Way to go Dad.

Ice Cube, Hot Night

It was a very hot day when I picked up my assignment for the Ice Cube concert on 10th Street in Modesto for the Bee. I was excited for the challenge and decided to shoot without a flash - no safety net. I practiced during the warm up acts, but my D300 made it almost too easy. I kept waiting for the night air to cool, but when Ice Cube took the stage at 12:45am, it was still in the high 80s. After having been kicked out of the camera pit, all of us photographers had to work our way back into the back stage area, and then back into our positions. I only had about 15 Minutes to shoot since I couldn't burn too many overtime hours, and at the last second, Ice Cube's manager let me go on stage just before Cube threw up a "W" for the West Coast and the crowd went nuts. Bear Flag

There is a new wine that has just come out called Bear Flag, and it is rather close to our hearts here at the Daily Double A. One of our closest friends, Beth Cutler, and Hillary, who's wedding Ali and I photographed last night, actually made this wine. It just hit shelves last Tuesday and I think that it is fantastic. Mendota and the Delta Smelt

First, I'm so sorry for the lack of posting this past month. We have been really busy since we're in peak wedding season, and it just takes a lot more work to keep up two blogs! To view the wedding stuff, feel free to check out this blog: www.alisonyinweddings.com/blog

Now, onto the post. A little while ago, I had the good fortune to do my first assignment for the Washington Post. I met up with their reporter Dave Fahrenthold in the small town Mendota (pop. 9600), which is west of Fresno and south of Merced in the Central Valley. The town is suffering from a 41% unemployment rate due to a lack of water, which is a combo of drought and the water pumps being turned off in an effort to save the delta smelt, which are on the endangered species list. We had a long day of exploring Mendota, touring farms, photographing an impromptu visit from Arnold, and then a long drive to the Delta estuary. For more information, here is the article.

Youth Track

Please excuse the lapse in recent blog posting - we recently moved (still in Oakland) and have been overwhelmed with house projects. We went from sharing about 300sq feet to now 1100sq ft (a major upgrade) so we've had a lot of furniture work to do. We'll post photos of the new home soon (once are projects get closer to being finished).

Bears eat the Gophers

The Cal Bears killed the Minnesota Gophers last weekend on their way to the National Semi Finals on May 1. I would never play rugby, but man is it fun to watch and shoot. I plan on following them in the finals.

As part of Ken Kobre's photojournalism class we are assigned to make a portrait of a teacher. I decided to shoot Christina Lewis, a clown teacher. Lewis runs the Clown School of San Francisco.

Working with her to make these portraits was a joy. She was very welcoming and easy to work with coming up with ideas. She has a very magnetic personality, which I think must be helpful in her line of work. I hope that this comes out in my portrait of her.

I was sent out to photograph the annual almond trees in full bloom - an assignment that every photographer at the Bee has done multiples times. I grew up with Bill's daughter Thea, and our families have remained close throughout the years. Bill creates beautiful, organic pieces that are functional and retain the natural beauty of the wood. Photo II: Golden Gate Park Assignment

As some of you already know, I am currently getting my BA in Journalism as SFSU. I am taking Photo II from Ken Kobre, and my first assignment for the class was to take candid of children in Golden Gate Park. This has always be a challenge for me because when I shoot kids in parks I stand out. It is very easy to pot a 6'6" guy lurking around kids. I am sure that at any moment someone is going to call the cops. Plus, often small children are scared of me. This shoot went well, however, and I was only asked if I was a pedophile. I politely said. "nope."

Fresh Walnuts and Pomelos!

Last Sunday I was treated to fresh walnuts and pomelos off of Crows Landing Road in Modesto when I was sent out to enterprise. Modesto is fairly dead on Sundays, particularly Super Bowl Sunday when people are indoors watching the game, so I felt very lucky to find these three: Juan Rodriguez at his fruit stand with friends Jose and Petra Obideo. Timmy Chainsaw Massacre

Timothy Markin, 40, is a captain on the Stanislaus Hotshots, and was my last squad boss on the Groveland Hotshots. He is one of the best sawyers, chainsaw operators, I have ever known. However, what Timmy, as he is called, is know for is his wild personality and his inability to quit. Timmy is an unstoppable force. I learned most of what I know ablout clearing brush from him, and I remember fondly the times that I spent with Timmy among others on Crew 4, the Groveland Hotshots.

Because I now live in Oakland and have become soft Timmy was called in to clear brush on my parents property. It worked out that one of the days I was visiting he was clearing brush so I was able to help out. It felt good to work with him again. Timmy is truly a monster when It comes to running a chainsaw. I have to admit that I was "broke off" by the end of the day. I am sure that Timmy will gloat about this fact. So this post is for him. I hope that you enjoy.

A Soldier Returns

Last Sunday was my first experience photographing a soldier's body being returned to his family. Army Spc. Tony Jerold Gonzales, 20, was killed in Iraq Dec. 28, just two weeks before he was to go on leave for a holiday break with his family in Newman, Calif. The Gonzales family, including his three older sisters, mother, father and girlfriend, and friends gathered at the Modesto Airport to receive his casket and honor his life with a traditional military funeral. The family was wonderful to interact with and very nice to give me full access during such a difficult time. "T.J." was obviously loved very much by those around him. Photos by Alison Yin

Turlock Homeless Shelter

I am way behind on my blogging so I'll attempt to catch up in the coming weeks.

These photos are from a shoot I did at a homeless shelter in Turlock that opened in the beginning of December. It is only for single men, which is something that is definitely needed since most shelters are geared towards providing for women and children. The opening of the shelter was also right in time since nights are in the 30s-40s in the valley these days. The effects of the poor economy are visible particularly throughout small towns in central California since the unemployment rate continues to rise.

This shelter is especially nice because the space used to be a hotel. With so many rooms, many of the men are able to get their own room and their own bed - a luxury not found at most shelters.

Ali and I went down to Glendale for Christmas holiday. I am not big on buying lots of stuff, but I love spending time with Ali's family. I also have to say that I love the new jacket Ali bought me in Paris.

Fun with color

Apartment Studio

I try to make the most out of the little space and gear that Alison and I have in our studio apartment. One day we will be able to afford space and equipment, but for now learning from my mistakes is a lot of fun. This is what I shot the night after I finished my last final. I have to day it is nice not having another book to read, or paper to write. These are both simple three light setups. I used two Ikea 50-30 watt adjustable halogen desk lamps and one SB 800, balanced with a tungsten (3200K or 2800K) gel.

Raiders holiday

This is the first Raider game I have shot in two years. I missed the feeling I get being on the field. Football is one of the things I love. Going to the game was my father's Holiday present to me. I couldn't think of a better gift.

St. Stanislaus

I was given one of those last minute photo packages for A1 from the weekend desk to shoot a church opening. I got lucky with the light, and I think it is nice to be under pressure again. I miss the immediacy of shooting dailies. Well, I hope you like them.

It was standing room only when the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church opened it doors for the first time to the pubic as it hosted the Modesto Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Candlelight Concert in Modesto, Calif., Saturday, December 13, 2008. Merry-Go-Rounds

There are merry-go-rounds and carousels all throughout France.
This is the more traditional one in Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The children play a fun game where they hold sticks as they ride the horses and try to grab a ring off of a pole with their sticks.

Versailles

We took a day trip to Versailles and seeing all of its over-the-top splendor makes it easy to understand why there was a French Revolution. The weather was pretty stormy, but we managed to stay dry by hopping in and out of the palace buildings, cafes and markets. The rain clouds made for some magnificent skies! Photos by Alison Yin

This is the tree outside Marie Antoinette's bedroom. It was the most beautiful tree I've ever seen.

These are a few photos from outside the Sacre Coeur, the cathedral that sits atop the highest hill in Paris in the Montmartre neighborhood. This is where we will be staying for the next few weeks. Saks Fifth Avenue Runway Show

On the first of October, I photographed a party and runway show hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue and the Guardsman at the Galleria in San Francisco. The event was a fundraiser for the Guardsman to help send underprivileged children to summer camp, and yet the people who attended the fundraiser appeared so out of touch with anything having to do with economic struggle that it seemed more just like an excuse to throw a party for wealthy people. These shots are pretty standard, but since I don't really go to or cover that many runway shows, I thought they were still interesting. Photos by Alison Yin

Urban Shield, Part I

A few weekends ago, Adm and I photographed an event in the Bay Area called Urban Shield for 5.11 Tactical. It was unlike any other experience I've had, and I'm so glad that I was able to do it. Urban Shield is a competition and training exercise that brings 24 of the best swat teams from around the country to the Bay Area to participate in a 48 hour straight series of various scenarios at 24 different locations. Adm and I tag-teamed the Livermore Police Department swat team by switching on and off in ten hour shifts at all hours of the day to cover each of their scenarios. This was such an eye-opening experience on many levels: I entered places I never would be able to get into, I learned to shoot through a large safety mask, and saw things I never get to see. The guys on the Livermore PD team were so nice and patient with me - I really have so much respect for what these guys do.

Fig in the Night

Alison is a thief. Yes, that is right. When Alison and I were at her mother’s house in Glendale for Labor Day, she stole figs from the neighbors, as yet, unpicked tree. The figs were just crowding the leaves so she helped them out with their fig problem. Susan, Alison’s mother, paired them with goat cheese and aged balsamic vinegar; the figs were great and it was all thanks to my climbing and stealing girlfriend.

Lately, I have been photographing more weddings, which is one of the new directions I'm heading towards. I really enjoy the spirit of weddings - everyone is abnormally happy and in a good mood, there is a lot of beauty, and I like the challenge and pressure of capturing significant moments. These are a few of my favorite photos from a recent wedding that I shot with Preston Davis. It was a really fun and interesting wedding because the bride, Cynthia, is from Kenya, and so a lot of her family flew out from Africa for the ceremony and therefore combined Kenyan traditions with American ones. Jakob Dylan, Jakob Dylan

While Alison was photographing Outside Lands in San Francisco, I shot a small intimate concert with Jakob Dylan at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto. I had to shoot from the sound booth in the back, and I don't feel very strongly about the images I made. The angle was steeper than I wanted, and I was only able to photograph the first two songs. Furthermore, Dylan is not the most expressive performer. I am used to shooting a lot of indie shows where my only restriction is to not knock anything over on stage. If you have any thoughts on which is the stronger image or just want to complain about shooting at certain venues, feel free to comment.

By the way, Jakob Dylan was amazing.

UNC: Andaman Rising

At least once a year, UNC's visual journalism program works on a collaborative project abroad somewhere to create a documentary multimedia website. Back in the summer of 2006, I participated on a site about the Atacama Desert in Chile. Now, I'd like to share the latest project that UNC has produced: Andaman Rising, which looks at life after the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

Based out of a village next to the Andaman Sea, students used photos, audio, video, graphics and design to craft cultural snapshots of a region that has risen above tragedy. Working with a team of Thai translators, they documented the story of a teenage cross-dresser in a traditional Muslim community, the narrative of an illegal immigrant family from Myanmar, and the spiritual transformation of a young monk. This is the culmination of work from 14 JOMC students, five professional coaches and direction from my professor Pat Davison.

There is a lot of content on the site, so I encourage you to look at it when you have at least a few moments.

Outside Lands, Day 1

A few months ago, I signed up to photograph Outside Lands, the biggest music festival in the Bay Area that looks to challenge Coachella and Bonnaroo. Since I've never shot anything this big before, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. Basically, what it comes down to is this: the bigger the event, the less control and access. Although it's really exciting to hear and see some of my all-time favorite bands, it's also rather disappointing to feel like a pack-mule and one in a herd of sheep.

Now that Day 1 is through (and with that the pain of figuring out logistics), I plan to challenge myself to find more creative and artistic photos. Photos by Alison Yin
